RPM of the first Release Candidate of MySQL Community Server 5.5 are available in remi repository for fedora and remi-test for Enterpise Linux (RHEL, CentOS, ...).
From now, this stable version (Generally Available (GA) Release) is available in the remi repository for fedora, and so will replace the 5.1 version. It stay for some time in the remi-test repository for Enterprise Linux (but I don't plan to maintain 5.1 package for a long time).
To read :
This build use a spec file close to the one from Rawhide
The Federated, Archive and Blackhole storage engines are provided as plugin. See the comments in the configuration file.
WARNING: before upgrading, a full backup of your databases seems mandatory (a logical dump using mysqldump for example).
Simplest way to install is to use yum !
yum --enablerepo remi-test update mysql-server
For whose who prefer the download and manual installation, see the repository
WARNING: database created with an older version couldn't be used directly. You need to start the server without right management to run the database upgrade and create new right table (else, the server will fail to start and will record the message: [ERROR] Fatal error: Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.proxies_priv' doesn't exist) .
Running the mysql_upgrade command is mandatory. It checks all tables in all databases for incompatibilities with the current version of MySQL Server. If a table is found to have a possible incompatibility, it is checked. If any problems are found, the table is repaired. In all case, reading the documentation is recommended:
The service init script have been improved in this version to allow to run this quite simply:
# start in rescue mode (with --skip-grant-tables and --skip-networking options)
service mysqld startsos
mysql_upgrade
# re-launch in normal mode
service mysqld restart
Packages available for fedora >= 9.
Packages available for enterprise linux >= 4 (running on this server).
Commentaires
service mysqld startsos
Usage: /etc/init.d/mysqld {start|stop|status|restart|condrestart|try-restart|reload|force-reload}
On CentOS 5.5 64-bit
I did something wrong. I've updated directly from Oracle.
Will try again with your repo.
Yes, the "startsos" mode is specific to my RPM. I have add it to simplify the upgrade process.
Do I have to stop MySQL first before running yum and then startsos?
@Marek: No
During the "yum update", service is restarted.
After the yum update, check if mysqld is running
1/ if it's running, update was ok, no others need than running a mysql_upgrade, as always (it was ok for me on 5.1.54 to 5.5.8 update, on this server)
2/ if it's not running, you need to use the above command (startsos) to be able to achieve mysql_upgrade (if was ko for me on 5.5.6 to 5.5.7 update)

I've just finish to build the remaining RPM (fedora >= 9 and EL >= 5), older versions doesn't have the minimal required cmake version.
Just updated to MySQL 5.5.8 from 5.1.50. Server rebooted, but I need to run mysql_upgrade.
How long it should take to run it ?
I got:
Looking for 'mysql' as: mysql
Looking for 'mysqlcheck' as: mysqlcheck
Running 'mysqlcheck with default connection arguments
and it's staying this way very long so far...
OK. It works ;)
Update to 5.5.8-2 (fedora 13 and 14), synced with rawhide changes.
Hm compat-mysql51-5.1.54 seems to missing libmysqlclient.so.16 :-(

Please provide a src.rpm for compat-mysql51

Rebuild pure-ftpd with mysql 5.5 devel does not work as solution :-(

interesting: after reinstall with "rpm ivh --force" it works
seems there happened something wrong while plaing with personal builds of mysql5.5 in the past, i noticed this after reboot today because pure-ftpd did run since last year :-)
Update to 5.5.8-3 (fedora 9 to 12, for now), synced with rawhide changes.
